How PDS Nonprofit Transforms the Lives of Parrots

From Rescue to Renewal: How PDS Nonprofit Transforms the Lives of Parrots

At PDS Nonprofit, every rescued bird represents hope, compassion, and a second chance at life. Since opening our doors, we’ve rescued over 100 parrots, helping many of them find loving homes where they can thrive. Each adoption is carefully matched to ensure the right person is chosen, someone who understands, appreciates, and will truly love a rescue bird for life.

Our Beginning: Inspired by Prego

Every rescue begins with a story, and ours began with one very special parrot named Prego.
Prego was an Eclectus parrot who came into our lives through a local pet store. Though his time with us was short, just six months, his impact was profound. His passing changed everything.

Prego’s loss opened our eyes to how many parrots suffer in silence, misunderstood, neglected, or abandoned simply because people don’t know how to care for them properly. From that heartbreak came a mission: to create a sanctuary where parrots could heal, learn to trust again, and finally experience love and safety.

That mission became PDS Nonprofit, a rescue built in Prego’s memory and dedicated to giving every parrot the second chance he never had. His legacy continues to guide everything we do, from our hands-on rescue work to the educational articles and resources we share with bird lovers around the world.

A Mission Rooted in Rescue and Education

Our journey began with one simple mission: to make a difference in the lives of parrots through rescue and education. Over the years, we’ve seen countless birds come to us in need of care, healing, and trust. But our mission extends beyond rescue, it’s also about education.

Through our growing collection of parrot care and diet articles, we aim to help others learn how to properly care for their pet birds. These resources have quickly become a hit on social media, spreading awareness and inspiring more people to choose compassion and knowledge over convenience.

The Science of Avian Nutrition: A Book Inspired by Rescue

Education has always been at the heart of PDS Nonprofit, and that mission led to the creation of our book, The Science of Avian Nutrition.

Written with love and backed by years of hands-on experience and scientific research, the book explores the nutritional needs of parrots, bridging the gap between science and everyday bird care.

It was designed to help bird owners understand why nutrition matters, how diet impacts behavior and health, and how to create balanced, species-appropriate meals.
This book reflects everything we’ve learned through rescue because so many of the parrots who come to us have suffered from years of poor nutrition.

With each copy sold, we’re not only educating the bird community but also funding the rescue. It’s a true example of how knowledge can give back to those who need it most.

Educational Outreach: Teaching Compassion Through Knowledge

At PDS Nonprofit, education is more than just sharing information, it’s about changing the future for parrots. Every day, we see how a lack of understanding can lead to preventable health issues, behavioral struggles, and surrender. That’s why we’re dedicated to creating reliable, science-based resources that help parrot owners make informed, compassionate choices.

Our articles on parrot diet, enrichment, and behavior are written to simplify complex avian science into practical advice anyone can follow. They’ve become an important part of our mission, reaching thousands of readers across social media and our website. Each post helps someone, somewhere, learn how to provide a better life for their pet bird.

We believe that when people understand parrots their needs, instincts, and emotions, they begin to see them not as pets, but as intelligent, emotional beings who deserve respect and care.

As we continue to grow, our goal is to expand our educational outreach through guides, workshops, and online classes that empower more people to give their birds a healthier, happier life.

The Heart of PDS: Our Supporters and Friends

Behind every successful rescue is a community of incredible people who believe in what we do. We wouldn’t be here today without the generosity and kindness of those who continue to support us.

  • Sally H. generously donated five large bird cages, giving many parrots the safe space they deserve.

  • Lisa Norris, sponsor of Charlie the Amazon parrot who lives at PDS Parrot Shop, has been a dedicated friend—helping edit our cookbook and spreading the word about our mission.

  • Tina T., one of our very first monthly donors, has supported us faithfully through the years.
  • Brandon C., who continues to help cover everyday expenses.
  • Christa H., a long-time supporter and sponsor of Subhaan, our Eclectus parrot, has been with us through thick and thin.

  • Patricia not only adopted a female Eclectus from us but also ensures we have everything we need to keep thriving.

To all of our anonymous donors who give through Facebook and charity fundraisers, we may not know your names, but we feel your kindness every day.

To our many friends who lift us up with love, support, and encouragement, thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Hope in Healing: Stories That Inspire

This year, our rescue community came together to raise $3,600 for Noah, a parrot who suffered from seizures and required emergency hospitalization. Thanks to the compassion of our supporters, he was able to receive the care he desperately needed.

We also received donations for Angeleno, a parrot battling a severe skin infection that has required ongoing veterinary care since early 2025. Every donation, no matter the size, has helped give these birds a chance at health and happiness.

Building a Sustainable Future

We’re proud to be working toward becoming a self-reliant rescue. Our website, PDSParrotShop plays a vital role in sustaining our nonprofit work. Every purchase supports the parrots directly, covering medical bills, food, cleaning supplies, toys, and other everyday necessities.

Each handmade toy and product sold is a step toward ensuring that parrots in need continue to receive the care, attention, and love they deserve.

A Community of Compassion

At PDS Nonprofit, rescue isn’t just something we do, it’s who we are. Every bird we save, every article we write, and every donation we receive is part of a larger story of compassion and community.

We’re endlessly grateful to everyone who stands beside us on this journey. Together, we’re proving that love truly can transform lives, one parrot at a time.

Getting Involved: How You Can Help

Every act of kindness makes a difference. Whether it’s through donations, sponsorships, or simply sharing our mission, you are part of the reason we can continue to save lives.

There are many ways to get involved and help us give parrots the care and compassion they deserve:

  • Donate: Every dollar goes directly toward medical bills, food, toys, and daily care for the parrots at our sanctuary.

  • Sponsor a Parrot: Help provide ongoing care for one of our long-term residents and receive updates about their progress.

  • Shop for a Cause: Visit PDS Parrot Shop: where every handmade bird toy supports our rescue’s veterinary and daily expenses.

  • Spread the Word: Share our articles, stories, and social media posts to raise awareness about rescue parrots and responsible bird care.

Your involvement doesn’t just help us, it helps them.
Together, we can build a world where every parrot is understood, valued, and loved.
